Panicum virgatum / Switch Grass

Panicum virgatum was an important member of the Great Plains prairies. Like many tall grasses, it grows in dry and wet soil conditions, and full sun to part shade. Switch Grass does best with a little shade. Ornamental grasses are often overlooked in our landscape designs, but they provide excellent bird habitat and nice winter interest. Panicum virgatum grows 3 to 6 feet tall with a 2 to 3 foot spread.
