Amelanchier canadensis / Canadian or Shadblow Serviceberry
Amelanchier canadensis / Canadian or Shadblow Serviceberry
Canadian Serviceberry is somewhere between a large shrub and a small tree, with multiple trunks and an arching, elegant crown reaching heights of 25 ft. Serviceberries are rewarding throughout the spring and summer - they start with an abundance of star-shaped white flowers in the spring which are followed by delicious berries that ripen early in the summer. Easy to grow in full sun and moist, acidic soils, though it can adapt to wet or dry conditions and part shade.
Here in the Hudson Valley, Canadian Serviceberry is often called Shadblow Serviceberry or "Shad bush" because it flowers during the Hudson River shad runs.
