Aronia melanocarpa / Black Chokeberry
Aronia melanocarpa / Black Chokeberry
An adaptable and beautiful shrub, Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is a great addition to your landscape. White flowers become black berries which are edible when cooked, or great food for birds. If you don't cook them first, you will learn why they're called Chokeberries - they are quite astringent raw! Black Chokeberries are more medicinal than Red (Aronia arbutifolia), with higher antioxidants and many health benefits. Grows in dry to wet soils, in full sun to part shade, though best fruit production is in full sun. Grows 6 to 8 feet tall. Plus it has bright red foliage in autumn. You can’t go wrong with Chokeberry!
