This plant is native to eastern central North America and is a member of the Asteraceae (Aster) family. “Perfoliatum” refers to how the stalk perforates the leaves. This herbaceous perennial blooms in late summer and early fall and attracts butterflies. It is traditionally used to treat colds, flu, and fever, with the common name “Boneset” referring to the relief of the achy bone feeling that accompanies a fever. Plant it in sun to part shade in moist or wet soils. Grows 2 to 3.5 feet tall with a 2 to 3 foot spread.
