Platanus occidentalis / American Sycamore
Platanus occidentalis / American Sycamore
Platanus occidentalis is commonly known as the American sycamore and is one of the largest deciduous trees in the eastern United States. This is a fast-growing lowland tree found along streams, rivers, and floodplains. As the sycamore tree grows to maturity, the bark starts to peel off in patches, revealing the white bark underneath. This is what gives the tree its distinctive mottled bark pattern. Sycamore trees reach heights of 75-100 feet tall. They are commonly planted as a shade tree due to their extensive spread, also reaching up to 75-100 feet if planted in an open area. This species prefers full sun and medium to wet soils.
