Sympyotrichum pilosum / Frost Aster. The common name refers to the frosted appearance of the stems and foliage due to the fine hairs present - Hairy Aster is another common name. Plant Symphyotrichum pilosum in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soils, in areas where you don’t mind them spreading, as they are prolific self-seeders. Frost Asters grow 2 to 4 feet tall with a similar spread and are known to attract butterflies.
